What to Eat on Mounjaro When Nothing Appeals

Last reviewed August 2026 · by the Sated team · not medical advice

The short answer: when nothing appeals, stop trying to eat meals and start trying to eat small, cold, plain, protein-dense things. Cold food smells less, and smell drives most food aversion. Liquid protein works when chewing does not appeal. And eat to a schedule rather than to appetite, because the signal that used to tell you when to eat is exactly what the medication has turned down.

Why food stops appealing

GLP-1 medications reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying. The combined effect is that you feel full sooner, stay full longer, and stop receiving the prompts that used to make food attractive. For a lot of people this goes beyond "not hungry" into genuine disinterest, and sometimes into mild aversion, particularly to rich or strong-smelling food.

This is expected rather than alarming. It becomes a problem only when it tips into consistent under-eating, or when protein falls away for weeks at a time.

The principles that make eating possible

Cold beats hot

Cooking smells are the most common trigger for aversion. Cold food is far less confrontational: Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, cold chicken, prawns, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, overnight oats, a smoothie.

Small and often

Five or six small eatings beat three meals you cannot face. A plated meal can feel like a mountain when a few bites feel achievable.

Density over volume

You have limited room, so spend it well. Prioritise protein first, then whatever else appeals. A large salad is not a bad food, it just occupies space you no longer have.

Drink what you cannot chew

Protein shakes, milk, kefir, drinkable yoghurt, and smoothies with added protein all deliver without asking much of you. Soups count too. This is not a lesser option, it is the sensible one on bad days.

Eat by clock, not by appetite

If you wait to feel like eating, you may wait all day. Setting rough times, and treating them as appointments, is the single most effective habit here.

Things that go down when nothing else will

Aim for protein at each of those small eatings rather than trying to catch up at dinner. A day made of 20 g here and 15 g there adds up far more reliably than one intended large meal that never happens. See the protein guide for your actual target.

Timing it around your dose

Many people find the day or two after their injection is when food appeals least. If that is your pattern, plan the easy options for those days and put anything more ambitious at the far end of the week. A couple of dose cycles of noting how you feel usually makes the pattern obvious.

When under-eating becomes a problem

Speak to your prescriber if:

  • You are routinely managing only a few hundred calories a day, or skipping most days of eating
  • You cannot keep fluids down, or show signs of dehydration such as dark urine and dizziness on standing
  • You feel weak, dizzy or unusually exhausted rather than simply uninterested in food
  • Food has become actively aversive, or you have a history of disordered eating
  • You are losing weight very fast and feeling unwell with it

Staying longer at a lower dose is a routine adjustment, and it is a reasonable thing to ask for if eating has become genuinely difficult.

Frequently asked questions

What should I eat on Mounjaro when I have no appetite?

Small, cold, plain and protein-dense things: Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, hard-boiled eggs, cold chicken, cheese and crackers, protein shakes, clear soups. Cold food smells less, and smell is what drives most aversion. Eat to a schedule rather than waiting to feel hungry.

Is it bad to eat very little on Mounjaro?

Eating somewhat less is the expected effect. Consistently eating very little is not, and it makes muscle loss, fatigue and nutrient shortfalls more likely. If you are routinely managing only a few hundred calories a day, that is worth raising with your prescriber.

Are protein shakes a good idea when nothing appeals?

Yes. On low-appetite days liquid protein is often the difference between hitting your target and missing it entirely. It is a practical tool rather than a compromise, and it is particularly useful in the day or two after an injection.

Why does cooking smell put me off so much?

Smell drives a large part of food aversion, and GLP-1 medications appear to heighten this for many people. Cold or room-temperature food produces far less aroma, which is why it is often tolerable when a hot meal is not.
