Sulphur Burps on Mounjaro: Why They Happen and How to Stop Them
Last reviewed August 2026 · by the Sated team · not medical advice
The short answer: sulphur burps taste and smell of rotten eggs, and they are a well-known complaint on tirzepatide. The usual explanation is slowed stomach emptying: food sits for longer, and the breakdown of sulphur-containing foods by gut bacteria produces hydrogen sulphide gas. The things that reduce them are smaller, lower-fat meals, easing off high-sulphur foods, and not lying down after eating. They are usually unpleasant rather than dangerous, but pair them with severe abdominal pain and that needs checking.
What is actually happening
These medications slow the rate at which the stomach empties. That is central to how they work, and it is also why food has more time to ferment before it moves on. When that food contains sulphur, the by-product of bacterial breakdown includes hydrogen sulphide, which is the compound responsible for the rotten-egg smell.
It tends to be reported more with tirzepatide than with semaglutide, though people on both describe it. It also tends to cluster after larger or richer meals, and in the day or two following an injection when the slowing effect is strongest.
What tends to trigger them
Foods high in sulphur compounds are the usual suspects. That does not make them bad foods, and there is no need to eliminate them permanently, but easing off during a bad patch often helps:
- Eggs, and egg-heavy dishes
- Red meat, which is slow to digest as well as sulphur-rich
- Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts
- Onions and garlic
- Dairy, particularly for anyone already a bit lactose sensitive
- Protein shakes, which some people find are a trigger; switching brand or protein type sometimes resolves it
- Fizzy drinks and beer, which add gas to a system that is already slow
If shakes are your main protein source on low-appetite days, do not simply drop them and lose the protein. Try a different type first: whey isolate, or a plant-based blend, sometimes behaves completely differently.
What helps
Smaller and lower fat
Fat slows emptying further, so a large, rich meal is the worst case. Smaller portions move through more readily and give fermentation less to work with.
Stay upright after eating
Give gravity a chance for a while after a meal. Lying down with a slow, full stomach tends to make both burping and reflux worse.
Slow down and swallow less air
Eating quickly, using straws, chewing gum and fizzy drinks all add swallowed air on top of the gas already being produced.
Keep fluids going
Dehydration and constipation both tend to make the whole picture worse, and they frequently travel together on a GLP-1.
Ask a pharmacist
Simple over-the-counter options exist and a pharmacist can point you at something appropriate. Mention that you are on a GLP-1 medication, and mention any other medicines you take.
When it is more than unpleasant
Contact your care team promptly if sulphur burps come with:
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain, with or without vomiting, which the patient leaflets flag specifically
- Persistent vomiting, or an inability to keep fluids down
- Ongoing diarrhoea alongside them, which raises the risk of dehydration
- A fever, or you feel genuinely unwell rather than just uncomfortable
On their own, they are a nuisance. In combination with severe abdominal pain they are worth getting checked without delay.
Find your own triggers
Sated logs what you ate alongside how you felt, and lines both up against your dose days, so a pattern like "always two days after the injection, always after a big meal" becomes visible instead of theoretical. Free, no ads.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I get sulphur burps on Mounjaro?
Tirzepatide slows how quickly your stomach empties, so food sits for longer. Gut bacteria break down sulphur-containing foods during that time and produce hydrogen sulphide gas, which is what gives the burps their rotten-egg smell.
How do I get rid of sulphur burps?
Smaller and lower-fat meals, easing off high-sulphur foods such as eggs, red meat, cruciferous vegetables, onions and garlic during a bad patch, staying upright after eating, keeping fluids up, and avoiding swallowed air from fizzy drinks, straws and eating quickly. A pharmacist can suggest an over-the-counter option.
Are sulphur burps dangerous?
Usually they are unpleasant rather than dangerous. They warrant prompt medical attention when they come with severe or persistent abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, ongoing diarrhoea, or a fever.
Do sulphur burps go away?
For many people they ease as the body adjusts, and they are often worst after a dose increase or in the day or two following an injection. Identifying your own food triggers usually reduces them considerably.
